The multipurpose and modular launching system now has a name: Rampart

The acronym MPLS for the multipurpose and modular launching system lacked the forcefulness required to enable such a product to stand out at an international level. This new and more arresting name will now facilitate a wider identification and more persuasive promotion.

While the acronym MPLS has so far been used to refer to the multipurpose and modular launching system, this product warranted a term that would be more meaningful for the international market. This new, more striking name will no doubt give this product better visibility and facilitate its promotion. 
The idea behind this name comes from the ramparts built and used to defend a position, populations or a strategic location. It reflects the principle behind this launcher, which is to render each naval vessel impenetrable. More broadly, it also reflects the system’s ability to stand between all forms of threat and vital or strategic points of interest such as sea bases, air bases, army sites, etc.

This term has also been passed down through the centuries and now expresses the system’s evolutionary character.

This announcement comes after the successful firing tests in Canjuers, France at the end of May and also reflects the French Army’s operational interest in this Naval Group product.

Carried out with 68 mm laser-guided and non-guided rockets in a ground-to-ground configuration, this firing sequence confirms our demonstrator’s remarkable performance as well as the relevance of a modular and agile approach to the evolution of threats.

In conjunction with the close-range protection control station, Rampart covers the entire firing loop: right from threat detection to automatic target tracking, up to initiation of firing.
