29 May 2024 Human ressources Defense Naval Story

Yaël completed his entire work-study program within Naval Group, working in the design office, production workshop, and then as part of the program management teams on the sites of Cherbourg, Nantes-Indret and Lorient. He has learned new skills through this experience, one which also enabled him to discover a wide range or professions.

A work-study placement entirely at Naval Group!

Yaël applied for his first job at Naval Group in 2019 as part of his vocational training certificate in shipbuilding design and industrialisation, a choice also influenced by his passion for boats. He alternated between three weeks of classes in Saint-Nazaire and three weeks working on the site of Cherbourg in the Submarine Weighing and Stability Department. “I gained both technical skills and the ability to be rigorous,” he says.

Yaël then joined the site of Nantes-Indret for the internship period of his bachelor’s degree in Naval and Maritime Industries. He was lucky enough to work on the production of nuclear reactors for the Barracuda program through his workshop management tasks in the Methods Department, mainly those of scheduling and production management. “After my time spent in the design office, I could better understand the whole process, going from a specification right through to the finished ship. I appreciated the importance of management and human relations, as well as the resolution of technical constraints.”

Yaël’s Master’s degree in management at the Institut d’Administration des Entreprises in Nantes then offered a change of pace as he spent 70% of his time in the company! He was entrusted with monitoring a number of R&D projects in the department managing bids and preliminary projects on the site of Lorient.

“During my first year, I learned about cross-functional management, risk and opportunity management, financial management and long-term planning whilst working with naval architects, engineers and specialist technicians.

My department manager chose the subject for my dissertation in my final year of studies: optimising the performance of the department and our activities using operational excellence tools.”

The appeal of Naval Group’s work-study placement opportunity

After five years now with Naval Group, it’s time to take stock. “My experience within the company has been rich and diverse. Given its size, the group is able to offer many opportunities to its work-study students and on all its sites following their last year of high school.

My tutors have always been of great help, entrusting me with assignments tailored to my field of study and time spent at the company. This has ensured a balanced student-life, allowing me to find time for my passion of sailing too!

Finally, Naval Group has helped me succeed at every step of my work-study placement. This year, for example, I have one day a week to work on my dissertation.”

Yaël is now looking for a job to take up in September. “I have gained an overview of the group’s activities and collaborated with a wide range of profiles, allowing me to build my own network. My goal is now to remain at the site of Lorient and to work in production management on the shipyard.”

“ I have benefited from a very interesting working environment and a wonderful support program thanks to my work-study placement.”
